Masters of Doom is a well written book and an inspirational story about how two young and talented software developers turned their passion for games development to a millionaire business and a technology success. The book is related to the story of the young and talented John Carmack and John Romero, founders of id Software, that in the latest eighties and in the nineties developed and produced together some of the most popular video games hits in the computer era.
The book is a very nice read and is also really inspiring. It shows how normal and passionate guys impacted the future steps of an industry by innovating it. But what are the lessons we can learn from the id Software guys?
In this small post I want to highlight the factors that according to me facilitated their success.
Have a goal
To start your journey, you need to know what it is going to be or look like your destination. The id guys had a simple goal: make awesome games.
So, before starting, you need to really define what is your goal and aim to reach it. Do not be the poser, saying that you want this and that only to try to impress others.
Innovate
You will not make any impact by doing things in the same way they are already done.
The real advantage that id Software had was that they were passionate of computer games and for this reason they wanted to be at the top of the computer games industry. The way to do that was to innovate the industry and to develop new technology. They found a niche for that particular moment of the computer industry (i.e. personal computer games) and then started to innovate it by creating the first 3D games.
Try to find how you can improve how is done by the industry the thing you are going to do. The improvement can be better technology , simplification of the product to make the user experience easier, better organization or marketing strategy.
Commit yourself
If you want to have success in something you really need to commit on what you are doing. There are several moments in the book in which it is visible that when they were focusing on building an amazing product they did their best and when they did not have enough focus they lost time and resources.
There is no easy way: only hard work is paying.
Conclusion
It is very simple (at least in theory): understand what you want to do, do it in the hard way by innovating and making an impact, do not stop and keep going focusing on it and doing your best.
