Each summer, the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA), hosts a national summer learning day to encourage and inspire summer learning. This year they have dedicated an entire week, July 8–13, to the celebration. Each day has been given a special theme to reach all components of learning and growth that can be achieved over summer break.

  • Kick-Off Day (Today)
  • Discovery Day (July 9)
  • Masterpiece Day (July 10)
  • Future Leaders Day (July 11)
  • Bookworm Day (July 12)
  • Winning at Wellness Day (July 13)

Learning should never take place exclusively within school walls. For some time, researchers and educators have focused on how to prevent the “summer slide,” or student loss of content over summer months. New research indicates that the summer slide may not be as influential on achievement gaps as previously thought — which perhaps allows for even more flexibility, innovation, and creativity in summer learning initiatives. Summer provides an excellent time to get outdoors, get creative, and get excited about learning and exploration. In support of this week, we will be highlighting resources each day that align with these themes and encourage creative summer learning experiences.

Want to celebrate in person? The NSLA uses Summer Learning Day to mobilize these efforts and make them more visible to students, parents, and educators. You can search for Summer Learning Day events and opportunities for all students happening in your area by exploring this database, which includes activities ranging from STEM activities at local libraries, to exercise and sports events, to gardening and story times.
