Interoperability has become a focal point for many EdTech developers and school districts. In the past few years, we’ve used learning science to create innovative and effective digital solutions. With these tools, the future of education is looking bright — and we feel passionately about the potential of these technologies to transform learning environments and make mastery attainable for all students. But these outcomes aren’t going to be widespread until we make tech implementation and use both seamless and accessible.

Essentially, interoperability would allow the various digital tools in a classroom to exchange information, communicate, and pair up in such a way that improves instruction. It would also make tools and content much more accessible: students and teachers would have a single account and password to keep track of, and be able to utilize various resources without jumping through digital hoops. Teachers would have student data at their fingertips that provides valuable insights, and students would navigate through a collection of tools and content to decide which best fits their learning needs. Interoperability is about ensuring that teachers are free to make the best use of their time, and to find and use powerful resources with ease.

To learn more about interoperability and to find strategies for implementing digital solutions in your district, register for the “Digital Learning and the Importance of Interoperability and Open Standards” webinar, hosted by Future Ready Schools®:

At McGraw-Hill Education, we know that interoperability is a crucial step in transforming a district’s digital ecosystem. While there isn’t one definitive solution, we’ve taken the time to listen to our teachers, pause, and consider the most effective way to bring interoperability to districts striving for impactful digital learning opportunities.

In thinking about ease of use and open resources, we partnered with Knovation, a reliable and comprehensive online resource curation. Users of Engrade, our K-12 learning management and assessment platform, can now access the Knovation Content Collection. What’s so exciting about this partnership is that the resources in Knovation’s collection are professionally evaluated, standards aligned, and searchable. The content within the Knovation collection is completely reliable: users can rest assured that what they are using for teaching and learning is vetted and academically sound. It has also been tagged for effective searching, and set up for easy organization — which is so crucial when considering every teacher’s limited (and precious) amount of available time. The award-winning application netTrekker within Knovation allows students and teachers to search for content by standard, share content with the whole class or an individual student, and even work to establish interdisciplinary connections. The partnership between Knovation and Engrade is a pivotal (and exciting) new understanding of the way purposeful content and powerful technology can form a truly flexible learning environment. Engrade had already mastered the uniting of curriculum, student data, and assessment — and now, we’re adding flexible and reliable resources to the mix.

The Engrade and Knovation partnership isn’t the only step we’re taking to increase our focus on interoperability. We also offer our districts integration services: a suite of flexible services designed to ensure end-user access and ease the digital conversion process. A key component of that service set is Access Manager. Access Manager is a comprehensive integration service certified by One Roster™, which is an IMS Global® standard that focuses on how digital systems used in schools can capture and integrate student roster data. One Roster™ sets standards for efficient and seamless digital account management, and Access Manager meets those standards by making moving student rosters into digital tools a stress-free process. With rigorous standards and trusted programs, onboarding can become manageable and learning can be more accessible.

Don’t forget to register for the Future Ready Schools® “Digital Learning and the Importance of Interoperability and Open Standards” webinar (It’s today!). The panelists will give you the information and tools you need to begin thinking about interoperability in your district. Register here→
