Last week, we teamed up with The Great Kindness Challenge, Making Caring Common of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Sanford Harmony to put on a webinar with research and strategies for your social and emotional learning initiatives.
We had school counselors, district leaders, and classroom teachers from around the world join us for the presentation, and everyone learned something new to take back to their learning communities. But, if you didn’t have a chance to catch the live event, don’t worry! We have the full recorded version below.
Here’s what you can expect to find in the webinar:
Making Caring Common
First, you’ll hear from Milena Batanova of Making Caring Common, a project of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Milena gave attendees an overview of SEL, including components and core competencies. Then, she went in-depth with the benefits of investing in social and emotional learning, and some of the challenges you might encounter in implementing an SEL program at your school. She finished by walking through the various components of empathy, and listing some key resources and actionable next steps.
Sanford Harmony
Next, you’ll hear from Margaret Johnson of Sanford Harmony, a social and emotional learning program that provides teachers with a set of tools to drive SEL initiatives in their classrooms. Margaret opened with a real-life example of Harmony at work in a school district, then went into the various approaches and activities used in the system.
The Great Kindness Challenge
We finished the webinar with a brief presentation from Jill McManigal, from The Great Kindness Challenge. Jill provided viewers with a brief overview of the Challenge, which is an open, accessible, and flexible program to improve school climate in grades K-12. In this portion of the webinar, you’ll learn how your school can get involved in the global event, and how the Challenge can help you further your SEL goals.
