Happy National STEM/STEAM Day! November 8th stands as a day to recognize students and life-long learners for their passions in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. Given that occupations in S.T.E.A.M. related fields are expected to grow 70 percent faster than other occupations, helping students actively engage and take an interest in these subjects can be greatly beneficial to them later on (1).
A lot of research surrounding the STEM community focuses on science and math, as these are traditional school subjects. However, in today’s changing climate, it is important to start weighing more focus on technology and engineering. Researchers suggest,
“With reference to technology, there are very few other things that influence our everyday existence more and about which citizens know less” (2).
It may be time to begin educating ourselves and our students on the relevance of technology as well as engineering. Although engineering has some presence in schools, research suggests its presence is not consistent with the number of careers and contributions engineering makes to society (2). Engineering activities and lessons in school provides students with skills in problem solving and innovation that can carry over to other subjects (3).
So how do we better incorporate technology and engineering into our current educational models? While there is no simple, cookie-cutter solution to this question, we have collected several resources from various industry thought leaders for you to utilize.
