SXSW EDU 2023: Vote for the Conversations You Want to Join

Event Community Voting Starts Today

SXSW EDU selects session proposals based on public voting — meaning that you have the opportunity to weigh in on the stories, speakers, and topics you want to see highlighted in 2023. Even if you know you won’t be attending the event live, your vote can help shape the conversation at a national event with influential thinkers and leaders in PreK-12 education!

Below is an overview of our submissions. When you’re ready to vote, simply click the link below your favorite submission. If you’re passionate about these sessions, be sure to share them with your colleagues before voting ends on August 21.

What We Know About the Science of Writing

The swell in attention to the Science of Reading points to the urgency of teaching students to read. However, we must also turn our attention to the research behind the Science of Writing. Writing is an invaluable skill that empowers learners to communicate their ideas and has proven ties to comprehension and fluency. This panel will discuss key themes from decades of seminal research on writing instruction and explore how that research can be translated into instructional pillars across K-12.

Striving for Deeper Student Engagement with AR

While Augmented Reality (AR) deeply engages students through multimodal learning experiences in abstract concepts of any subject, it’s not widely used for instruction — only 20% of educators currently use it in their classrooms. Hesitant educators sometimes associate AR with gimmicky, unreliable new tech, and many confuse it with Virtual Reality (VR), which requires special technology. This panel will explore how AR, when created in alignment with learning objectives and with real classrooms in mind, can create new pathways to motivating, enriching experiences for all students.

Speakers:

  • Rob Spierenburg, CEO, All Things Media
  • Phil Puthumana, Program Manager, Verizon Communications Inc.
  • Renee Dawson, Verizon Innovative Learning Schools Coach & Lab Mentor, Atlanta Public Schools
  • Patrick Merchant, Senior Digital Strategist, McGraw Hill

The Cutting Edge of Assessment

Emerging technologies from voice technology to augmented reality hold the potential to not only reshape how students learn but also how we assess and respond to student needs. This panel brings together experts in the field of assessment and technology to explore the ways new technologies can better address issues of bias and student anxiety while providing a more complete picture of student learning.
