It’s that time: the SXSW EDU 2018 Panel Picker voting has begun. If you’re not familiar with the process, SXSW EDU is an education conference and festival that empowers educators by allowing attendees to actively make their voices heard in the creation of the event itself. The SXSW community picks sessions by voting proposals “up” or “down” via the Panel Picker. The 2018 Panel Picker is open for voting from Monday, August 7 — Friday, August 25, so cast your votes soon!

This year, we have five PreK-12 sessions up for your consideration in the Panel Picker. You can find details about each session below, along with a link to vote for the session. Just create a Panel Picker account and start exploring session proposals.

Teaching the First Majority — Minority Generation

As a nation, we are moving quickly toward a minority majority in our public schools, with 20% of students speaking a language other than English at home. These students bring with them linguistic and cultural identities that schools must address. How are we preparing the next generation of teachers to support ELs in the classroom, and what are we doing to close the achievement gap between non-EL and EL students? Our panel will discuss these and other questions that are mounting in the field.

  • Moderator: Dwight Jones, VP of National Urban Markets, MHE
  • Panelist 2: Dr. Jane Echevarria, Professor Emerita at Cal State — Long Beach
  • Panelist 3: Margarita Pinkos, Executive Director of the Multicultural Education Department, Palm Beach County Public Schools

Architecting Future Ready Digital Schools

An effective digital transformation involves a lot more than technology itself — it takes thoughtful planning, centered around concrete learning objectives. In this panel, district leaders, teachers and edtech professionals will discuss (1) how to create a shared vision and mission around a digital transformation, (2) how to prepare administrators and teachers to lead and drive the change, (3) what to do at the community level and (4) unexpected considerations that districts sometimes encounter.

  • Moderator: Lisa Carmona, Chief Product Officer, MHE School
  • Panelist 2: Tom Murray, Director of Innovation, Future Ready Schools
  • Panelist 3: Brianna Hodges, Director of Digital Learning, Stephenville ISD

Closing the Digital Gap in Urban Districts

With internet access and technology becoming increasingly more affordable and widespread across U.S. schools, why are schools in urban districts still lagging behind? Issues such as varying levels of funding across districts and states and unequal internet and device access in school classrooms continue to plague these schools for several reasons. Panelists will discuss these issues in depth and what needs to be done to for schools in order to close the digital divide.

  • Moderator: Dwight Jones, VP of National Urban Markets, MHE
  • Panelist 2: Pedro Martinez, Superintendent, San Antonio ISD
  • Panelist 3: Bill Hite, Superintendent, School District of Philadelphia
  • Panelist 4: Michael Hinojosa, Superintendent, Dallas ISD

Community Partnerships that Break Barriers

When it comes to equity and access in education for children today, educators, parents and local community and business leaders all play a part, particularly in lower-income, urban districts. In this panel, you will hear about innovative new ways that school leaders can partner with local businesses and community leaders to lower barriers to engagement with local schools, gain access to a wider range of resources and open new doors for students — to benefit students and the entire community.

  • Moderator: Ardena White, National Director of Strategic Accounts, MHE School
  • Panelist 2: Mark Bedell, Superintendent, Kansas City Public Schools
  • Panelist 3: Traci Davis, Superintendent, Washoe County School District
  • Panelist 4: Donna C. Bryant, President, B2B Strategic Solutions Inc.

Gifted 2.0: Can Every Student Become Advanced?

From Albert Einstein to Steve Jobs, it’s a common assumption that geniuses are born, not made — and traditional approaches to gifted education reflect that assumption. However, research shows virtually ANY student can perform at “gifted” levels with the right support — and new personalized learning solutions finally allow that support to be scaled for all students. This panel explores new instructional approaches that can help all students become “advanced learners” and achieve their full potential.

  • Moderator: Matthew Mugo Fields, Founder of GiftedandTalented.com and head of MHE Consumer Group
  • Panelist 2: Pedro Noguera, Professor, Graduate School of Education and Informational Sciences, UCLA
  • Panelist 3: Jonathan Plucker, Professor of Talent Development, Johns Hopkins University
