How I Lost My Work Space in Motherhood and I Love It…

Sometimes.

I have sat in a 2x2 space in the corner of my child's playroom going on eight weeks now.

I strategically placed the small folded floor table at an angle to hide my laptop that my 1-year-old daughter has most recently found fascinating.

She can be seen sneaking over to my desk on any given day, banging on my laptop keys as if she is playing the piano. The desk is about 1 foot off the ground, causing me to sit crossed-legged with knees low to the floor as not to bump my work table.

I am a person who likes small spaces; wide-open rooms give me anxiety and make me feel as if someone will jump out at a distance and chase me.

I know I have watched too many scary movies as a kid, but that does not change that small spaces usually equate to safety for me.

Yet, on tough days, my 2x2 workspace feels less of a small office and more of an uncomfortable obstacle course.

Under my desk, I strategically hide snacks so that while on office calls, I am able to hand my daughter the sweet version of Multi-Grain Cherrios without breaking eye contact with co-workers.
