“On Your Feet Soldier” — you know that line, don’t you? It’s from one of my favourite movie’s The Terminator. The scene marks the transformation of sarah connor into our Sarah Connor. It’s the moment she changes from a passenger to a leader, amateur to a pro.

Even if the transformation was aided by being chased by a terrifying hulk of indestructible metal, it was still a choice that she made. She fought; she didn’t lay down and give up.

Terminator aside that mindset shift is a pivotal point in any writer’s journey and the transformation from an amateur to a professional starts with the way you see and treat yourself.

I don’t believe that money is the sole marker of a professional writer either.

Years ago, I had an opportunity to produce my first play at a theatre in London. I made a little bit of money on my ticket sales, and it was the first time I ever received payment for my writing. Did this make me a professional writer? No way! I was still a hopeless amateur, and while I don’t regret any of my bad decisions because they’ve shaped me into a better person, there are many cringe memories remaining.
