Is It Process or Human?

Sometimes, when your team’s performance suffers, the first thing that comes to your mind is “the process isn’t right”. The second thing may be “how can I improve or change it for the better?”.

Not so fast.

Try to answer these questions first:

  1. Do most of your team members complain about the process?
  2. Do most of your team members perform worse than expected?
  3. Have you ever tried to help and guide your weak performers before?
  4. After you tried to help your weak performers, and nothing is better. Is that the case?

Your answers to the questions may indicate that the problem is not with the process but the individuals … the humans.

The fact is any process is never a goal. It is just a mean to an end. It can only be as good as the people who define, follow, and use it.

Probably, this guy is not capable of doing what he is told to do.

Probably, this guy is assigned to a mismatch task.

Probably, this guy is not willing to learn to adapt.

In this case, the process itself does just fine. It requires no urgent adjustments.

Instead, you look a bit deeper to a real root cause. You spend more time with your weak performers. You give them guidance.

You reflect your view to them. You reassess their capabilities. You reconsider a set of jobs that suit them. You do more to know them to be able to help them.

The last thing you want here is a panic reaction. Not only won’t it help ease the situation, but it will destroy a team’s morale and make your strong performers unhappy.

Thinking and writing are the things I like. Sharing is what I love. Because of them, I write everyday to share stories from my thoughts and experiences, from the future I see and believe in. Everything I use to build Inthentic a better home. A home of people who want to do good things and give back. A home that is a small starting point of changes for a better society. I am proud of what I am doing. And even prouder to know that I am not doing it alone.

Thanks for reading. :-)
