Student Experiences — Inspirit AI Live Online Program Summer 2020
This summer, high school students from all over the world came together in our Inspirit AI Live Online program to learn about artificial intelligence from Stanford graduate students and alumni. Here are some of their experiences.
Ally Bush, 10th grade, Lakeside School, USA
The Inspirit AI camp was an incredible whirlwind of information. After an intensive review of Python and its libraries, we launched into a final project, or a culmination of all that we had learned — everything from the ethics of AI to industry-level natural language processing models. My team built and presented an AI model that recognizes human emotions. During the two weeks when I worked on this project, I not only learned about coding, but also formed connections with three project teammates from around the world. Attending this camp helped me realize my passion for STEM, specifically AI, and the supportive instructors happily supplied resources for me to pursue it further!

I have never attended a program that makes AI so accessible for high school students. Not only did I learn how to build various models, I also understood how they worked and how I could apply them to my own passions for history and political science. Inspirit AI has equipped me with the tools and mentors to pursue artificial intelligence further with a strong foundation.
Isha Jagadish, 10th grade, Saratoga High, USA
The Inspirit AI summer program helped me grasp fundamental AI concepts in just a span of two weeks. Surrounded by a group of welcoming instructors and peers from all around the world at different skill levels made me feel like I could be open and ask questions. I particularly enjoyed my time working in the Healthcare Project group, where I got to dive into the cross section of medicine and artificial intelligence. At first I didn’t know if we were going to be able to complete an entire project and presentation in just five short days, but it ended up happening and it couldn’t have been better. My experience at Inspirit AI was not only enlightening, but also enjoyable, and I hope to return to this program next year to expand my knowledge of AI. But most importantly, I hope to use the concepts that I learned in this program to help me in my future endeavors.

The Inspirit AI camp taught me concepts such as reinforcement learning, convolutional neural networks, and generative adversarial networks in workshops and everyday lessons. I later applied some of these concepts and worked with my group to create a facial emotion detector. We then created a demonstration and presented it to a live audience. I was lucky enough to be able to participate in this camp and learn the fundamentals of AI.
Christina Liao, 12th grade, Los Alto High, USA
From working on the code to learning more about our instructors, every moment that I experienced throughout the program was one to remember. I had first entered this program just wanting to know the basics of AI and what it consisted of. However, with the countless information and resources that were provided throughout the course of the program, my interest in A.I. skyrocketed and I became more curious about the applications of AI. Inspirit AI allowed students like me to experience aspects of AI that was not all coding. They provided us with workshops on many topics such as BERT or Reinforcement Learning outside of class time, which I really appreciated. I soon came to an understanding that AI and CS could be applied to basically almost any field or topic I could think of. The possibilities were endless when it came to technology or more specifically AI, and I was fascinated.

The Inspirit AI programme has proved to be an invaluable experience for me. It has definitely changed my approach towards computer science. I will always look back at my time here with fondness. I learned new AI techniques like cropping, making neural networks and many more. Apart from coding exercises, I also learned new concepts like linear regression, logistic regression etc which were also very beneficial for me. I always wanted to do a professional AI project in my life. Through this programme I got the opportunity to collaborate with many students across the world and build a successful AI project. Together we created a program for diagnosing pneumonia patients through medical imaging. This experience was one of the best in my journey with Inspirit AI.
