Amazon In Talks With The NFL To Solely Carry Many NFL Games Exclusively On Prime Video
The National Football League is close to securing a new rights deal with Amazon, which would see the tech giant ‘carry many games’ solely on its Prime Video streaming service.
The deal is estimated to cost Amazon $1 billion per season, making it’s the company’s largest foray into the sports rights space to date. Under their current deal with the NFL, Amazon holds the streaming rights for Thursday night football at the cost of $75 million per season.
However, those games have been shared with both Fox and the NFL network. The new deal would see Thursday night games only available on linear television in the team’s local market; this is similar to ESPN’s pay-tv network for Monday night games.
According to widespread reports, the new broadcast agreements could be finalized early next week, seeing the main TV networks possibly paying double their current rates.
The television deals for the league’s Sunday and Monday night games with CBS, ESPN, FOX, and NBC could run for as many as 11 years. ESPN’s deal could begin in the 2021–2022 season and the other networks for the 2022–2023 season.
The Wall Street Journal was the first to come out with the new report seeing the NFL continue to negotiate its domestic rights packages.
