The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and Delta inked a multi-year partnership, naming it its first official travel partner and airline.

The deal is the global air carrier’s first significant foray into women’s football. Delta plans to activate its sponsorship around fan engagement and focus on women’s empowerment and diversity, inclusion initiatives, and equity.

“Delta is a champion for the growth of women’s sport in the U.S. and around the world,” stated NWSL chief revenue officer Mitch Poll. “We’re excited to welcome their team to the family and work together as we continue establishing the NWSL as the world’s premier women’s soccer league.”

The value or terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, the partnership itself marks another giant leap forward for the league, which needs to accelerate its sponsorship growth after a series of governance issues.

“Joining the National Women’s Soccer League as its first-ever airline sponsor is a proud step in Delta’s work to support the teams and communities where we live, work and serve,” stated Delta SVP of global brand marketing Molly Battin.

The league has also signed deals with both Nike and cryptocurrency brokerage firm Voyager Digital.

The league kicks off its 10th season with the Challenge Cup on March 19th. This season the clubs will compete on a home-and-away basis for the first time since 2014, with the top six teams qualifying for the league’s post-season.
