Meet Meryllia Malu Luavasa, the shift leader at The Plant Cafe Organic’s Dogpatch location. The San Francisco native has been in the restaurant industry for two years and is dedicated to uniting her coworkers to ensure a seamless shift.

Instawork met up with Meryllia to get to know the woman who’s making sure everything runs smoothly at the 100% organic cafe.

Instawork: What do you love about the hospitality industry?

Meryllia Malu Luavasa: The staff & customers. I love being able to build community not just with my coworkers but also with our regulars as well. I miss folks when they don’t come in.

IW: What are some of the biggest challenges you face?

MML: Miscommunication. Maintaining unity between staff members (FOH & BOH). I’m committed to doing whatever it takes to make sure we’re all on one accord.

IW: What do you do for fun when you’re not at work?

MML: Play the guitar, dream with friends, paint, fellowship, kick it at the beach & park, and writing.

IW: What inspires you and keeps you going each day?

MML: Jesus, I loved the way He lived His life and how radical He was for people! Folks at my church and the ministry that I’m part of. I stay at a women’s home and seeing these women come out of the things they went through definitely inspires me to keep pushing.

IW: What advice would you give someone on their first day of work in the industry?

MML: You’re never too good to wipe tables. Unity is key & often times humility is the cost of it, stay humble.

Be sure to stop by The Plant Cafe Organic’s Dogpatch location to meet Meryllia and try some of their delicious, healthy food!
