DNAnexus, the global leader in cloud-based genome informatics and data management, is hosting a Grant Challenge on Instrumentl, a funding platform for science, to help fund crucial genomics research.

“Medical progress is driven by inquisitive and impassioned clinicians, researchers and data scientists determined to make a difference,” says DNAnexus Chief Medical Officer David Shaywitz. It’s this common view that brought DNAnexus and Instrumental together to expand funding for genomics research which is an area that is experiencing exponential growth.

“We’re empowering researchers who work to better understand the very building blocks of life,” says Angela Braren CEO of Instrumentl, “ Our collaboration with DNAnexus will give our global audience a chance to see what genomics researchers really do and get involved.”

The Funding Crisis for Research

Funding for genomics research, like funding for almost all research, is in short supply. Scientists spend 40% of their time hunting down grants instead of actually doing science. Genomics researchers are particularly vulnerable to budget cuts and lack of funds.

“The nature of genomic research is such that as a researcher progresses, unseen questions arise which require further, more in-depth experiments,” says Victoria Kentner marine invertebrate biologist and co-founder of Instrumentl, “Projects run out of money this way and can’t really move forward, if at all.”

How does the grant challenge work?

Are you working on a research project involving genetic analysis but need additional funds? DNAnexus and Instrumentl are offering $1,500 in Research Grants that can be applied to your overall Instrumentl crowdfunding campaign. In addition, DNAnexus will provide the winner a $5000 credit which can be applied to compute and storage costs to run genomic analyses in the cloud on the DNAnexus Platform. You’ll be raising funds alongside other amazing researchers in your field and you take home whatever you raise, whether you win the challenge or not.
