Great news! We’re now opening the collator set to external operators. But first things first: do you know what a collator is and what it does? Keep reading to understand how you can become an active member of our network.

What’s a collator?

A collator node is crucial in certain blockchain architectures, particularly in systems like Polkadot and its associated parachains. Its primary role involves aggregating and processing transactions, ensuring the production of new blocks for the blockchain.

Collators are essential for efficiently operating multi-chain blockchain ecosystems like Polkadot, where they handle transaction processing and block production. At the same time, the main relay chain focuses on validation and security. Here are the main functions and characteristics of a collator node:

Transaction Aggregation: Collators gather transactions from users and other sources. They collect these transactions into a format that can be processed and included in a new block.

Block Production: After aggregating the transactions, collators create a new block that contains these transactions. This block is then proposed to the validator nodes in the main relay chain (in systems like Polkadot).

Relay Chain Interaction: Collators work closely with the relay chain by submitting the newly created blocks. They do not validate the blocks themselves; instead, they propose them to the relay chain’s validators, who then verify and finalize these blocks.

Security and Validation: While collators focus on block production and transaction aggregation, the relay chain validators handle the security and consensus aspects, ensuring that the proposed blocks are valid and adhere to the consensus rules.

Network Efficiency: By offloading the task of transaction aggregation and initial block creation to collators, the overall network can achieve higher efficiency and scalability. This division of labor allows for a more modular and flexible blockchain architecture.

Parachain Specific: In the context of Polkadot, each parachain (a parallelizable blockchain running alongside the main relay chain) can have its own collator nodes. These nodes maintain the state of the parachain and are responsible for producing blocks specific to that parachain.

Why become an Integritee Collator?

As the primary mission of Integritee Network is to drive decentralization, we are now opening up the collator set for external operators to establish an unpermissioned operation of the Integritee Network. Therefore we have created a new Integritee Network Treasury Bounty where you can claim an amount of up to 300$ in TEER for your efforts to run an Integritee Network collator. This will also put you in a good position to be considered as a Validator in our Incognitee product, which we will launch later this year.

Being a collator for Integritee offers numerous advantages, combining the benefits of active network participation with potential financial rewards. It will help to ensure the smooth operation and resilience of the Integritee ecosystem.

How can you participate?

Anyone can join the set of unpermissioned collators by submitting a candidacy and bonding some stake in TEER. Candidates are selected based on their stake until the desired set is full. Check the documentation to run your first Integritee Network collator!
