Spiritual energy is a unique force for action in all dimensions of our lives. It is the most powerful source of our motivation, perseverance and directions.

Consider this. We have four different yet interrelated energy sources — our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual energy. One way to define this later, spiritual energy, comes from the book, The Power of Full Engagement: ‘the connection to a deeply held set of values and to a purpose beyond our self-interest.’

The authors, Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, go on to explain the importance of being able to tap into this spiritual energy source:

‘The quantity of energy we have to spend at any given moment is a reflection of our physical capacity. Our motivation to spend what we have is largely a spiritual issue. Fundamentally, spiritual energy is a unique force for action in all dimensions of our lives. It is the most powerful source of our motivation, perseverance and directions. Anything that ignites the human spirit serves to drive full engagement and to maximize performance in whatever mission we are on.’

In other words, maintaining a strong connection to a deeply held set of values and to a purpose (as in life purpose) beyond our own self interest, helps us know how to direct the other three energies. Of course, before we can maintain a strong connection, we have to become clear what our values and life purpose are.

I am suggesting this is often what’s missing, the presence of which would make a difference. The more this guidance system is developed and trusted, the easier it becomes to determine what’s next.

A primary part of our ‘guidance system’ is connecting to the deeply held set of values and to a purpose beyond our self-interest. In other words, we all have an ‘inner guidance’ system that we can utilize to point us in the direction we are to go next. Some call it their intuition, tapping into the Divine, their source of creativity, cosmic consciousness, etc.

By the way, one of my primary purposes as a writing coach is assisting people in developing this part of themselves.
