The Fatal Flaws of Humans Behind the Wheel

When it comes to car collisions, human error is the main culprit.

According to the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), human error is the cause of 93% of car accidents. From driving under the influence to texting and driving, people are often times juggling distractions while on the road. But as cars become more autonomous, there is hope for a future where we will trust our vehicles to get us from point A to point B safely. Until then, the numbers don’t lie–humans need to pay much better attention when they get behind the wheel. Additional findings from the NHTSA funded study follow.

40% of drivers admitted to driving more than 20 mph
over the speed limit.

34% sent text messages or emails while driving.

15% got behind the wheel while intoxicated.

45% drove while very tired, to the point of nearly falling asleep.
