At CeBIT 2016, Huawei introduced its Connected City Lighting Solution, an Internet of Things (IoT) lighting solution with multi level intelligent control. The main idea behind Connected City Lighting Solution is to connect the street lamps to the IoT and adopt a GIS based management system which will control the management of every street lamp.

The solution will provide the municipal mangers with the status information on the street lamps in every street and enable control of the on and off switches and the brightness of the lamps. The provision of on demand lighting would lead to reduction in energy consumption by up to 80%.

Street lamps is an important component of the cities but they consume vast amount of energies and significantly impact the municipal expenses. With Huawei’s Connected City Lighting Solution, all the street lamps will have a power and brightness controller which will use the 6LoWPAN technology. This technology is comparatively more efficient than others since it has lower power consumption and it is able to automatically diagnose and solve problems. With this technology, the street lamps will automatically calculate the lighting duration, and automatically adjust it as and when required (for example, the brightness will reduce at midnight when the traffic flow is not heavy).

Since this solution adopts a GIS based management solution, it is easy to maintain and operate. All the information about the street lamps is displayed in a comprehensive way and whenever any lamp malfunctions, the system is alerted and the problem is taken care of.

Installing this solution in the cities will help a great deal in cutting down the municipal expenditures. This will also ensure efficiency since all the street lamps of the city will be connected to a single system and all the information provided will help the municipal managers to handle all the components of the system. Properly working street lamps will also ensure safety of the citizens.
