Jakarta administration has been working hard to make Jakarta a smart city by 2018, when it will host The Asian Games. A smart city unit, which has been set up for this purpose installed a new command centre from which the city officials can easily monitor the city on the LED screes (fed by the city’s CCTV cameras). This command room is a part of a new headquarters launched for all of the smart city activities called ‘Smart city Lounge’, where lounge stands for Learn, Open, Unity, Networks, Guidance and Excellence. The primary function of the command centre is to respond to the complaints by the citizens coming from 11 platforms (including social media, emails, SMS or the city’s complaint app, Qlue). Some of the complaints are addressed directly, whereas the others are directed to the related agencies.

The smart city team wants to start with fire rescues first. In case of a fire, the operations room will pass along the traffic conditions and the location of the fire to the firefighters. It will also coordinate with the utilities department to check if there is water available for the fire hydrants and the electricity is switched off. Eventually, they aim to make the command room a room to coordinate emergency responses.

The officials believe that citizen participation plays a crucial role in for the success of the smart city initiative. As a result, the citizens can visit the command room and witness the activities being carried out. A co-working space has also been set up in the same area which is used for startups working with the government to build apps.

The team aims to be fully operational by the end of the year providing many more facilities to the citizens such as smart parking and improving the services provided to the citizens.
