I think this is the real problem, not the speed of Touch ID. Now that unlocking the phone is insanely fast and easy there should be no reason for this use of the lock screen as a “veranda.”

A better solution for notifications would be needed obviously. I think we are sitting at an awkward in-between stage right now where many iPhone users have Touch ID of the much slower pre-6S variety — also true of iPad users. Until a higher percentage of Apple’s user base can unlock that easily the lock screen will remain a semi-actionable jumping off point. But it’s utility is limited and its days are numbered.
