Find your Why

Part of living with intention is not just about knowing where you want to go, but also knowing WHY you want to get there. Over the years I have learned that a lot of my personal experiences could have turned out much differently — either for better or for worse — if I had really stopped to think about my END GAME.

[Tweet “Your end game is your M.O. (mode of operation) behind EVERYTHING.”] It’s your reason for going to a particular event or talking to a specific person. It even dictates why you are watching this, or tweeting that…it applies to EVERY ASPECT of your life. It’s your ‘Why!’ For example, there have been times when I wanted to have a few words with someone I see acting foolish. But then I stop and ask myself “What’s your end game here, Kelechi? What do you want to come out of this particular interaction?” It causes me to reevaluate my motives and intentions and saves me from wasting unnecessary time and energy. And more than 90% of the time, if I’m being honest, I really just want that person to know how dumb they look. But what comes after that? I’m going to call this person dumb and walk away? That doesn’t help anybody and makes me look just as foolish.

You see? Discovering your end game is of utmost importance. If asking myself ‘why’ for an insignificant interaction like that can cause me to stop and think twice before making a comment, imagine what that can do for anyone who’s trying to accomplish something much bigger.

Applying a WHY to your life is so important, especially when it comes to your dreams. We should all have an end game in mind when we are setting goals for the future. There has to be a meaningful reason driving us to WANT success.

If you have a hard time figuring out your end game, or even if you think you know where you want to go, here are a few things to remember when searching for your true ‘why’.

First and foremost, don’t look at anyone else. Most people want to be successful at a plethora of different things, but don’t really know what success looks like for THEM. So they try and try to match another person’s version of success — by doing what they see working for someone else — and then are left wondering why they never quite hit their mark. Figure out what matters the most to YOU. Success for them will not look like success for you, and vice versa. So before you invest in anything else: another course, software, product, website, whatever it is, make sure your why is for you and you alone. [Tweet “Your ‘why’ will give you focus, clarity and purpose, and no one can give you that but yourself.”]

Don’t just reach for income. When your life’s mission is wrapped around a dollar sign, you will never be at peace with your work. Chasing money will only cause more stress, frustration and discontent. Focus on the outcome -the impact you want to have on something or someone other than yourself.

Think big, then think bigger. When will you be content enough to stop reaching? The answer to that question should sound something like…never. Not that you will never ever stop or be at peace, but you should never stop reaching for better.

When you feel content, or better yet, comfortable, with where you are, that’s when it’s time to push forward and do more.

Once you have accomplished what you want up to that point, then you move on to a new game plan.

The most important thing I want you to consider, is making sure that your ‘why’ is enough to keep YOU going. Take some time and honestly think about what your end game will look like. Since it’s so near to the end of the year, it’s important to start putting things into perspective now. Don’t wait until the New Year to figure this out.

Define your why as soon as you can, and make every day from that point purposefully and intentionally focused on bringing your ‘why’ to life.
