In magic, or witchcraft, we usually associate the North direction with the Earth element. It’s the North that holds the wisdom of our ancestors, of all that has lived and has returned to the soil. The North is the realm of death and rebirth, and crossing its gate can give us a portal to the spirit world of our ancestors.

Watchers are powerful entities that guard the threshold to the elemental realms and hold the key to unlocking their secrets. But before going over the threshold of one of these gates, we first need its Watcher to grant us safe passage. Because of that, it’s important to treat these entities with the utmost respect. If they choose not to let us through, it’s probably because we’re not ready, and there’s some kind of work on ourselves we need to do before it’s safe for us to go through the gate.

In fact, the first time I tried to cross the threshold of the North, I wasn’t appropriately prepared and I was met by the Watcher of the North’s heavy warning.

Today, I’m sharing with you my personal experience with the Watcher of the North as I create an artwork representing it. You can see the full creation process on my YouTube channel.
