Welcome to the Interactive Designer’s Cookbook
This is a combined class project for IMM 370/370/470 Dust or Magic: the Psychology of Interactive Design at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). It reflects the work and discussion of many students.
The class started Spring 2017. Despite the release of Zelda Breath of the Wild that semester, this class found time to build the very first design “cookbooks” around the flavorful clusters of behavioral and psychology theory.
Wave 2 of the class was Spring 2018, when a second group of TCNJ IMM scholars started constructing their cookbooks — each contributing a fresh take on applying the age old ingredients of psychology to digital design.
Year 1 (Spring 2017), before and after — the people that make the difference.
Wave 3 happened in the Fall of 2019.
The fourth cluster of designers took place during the “great pandemic” in the Fall of 2020. Despite being limited to remote learning, we managed to sample the buffet of theory in the context of another set of contemporary digital products.
We invite you to join this community of designers and comment on our work with critical, constructive feedback.
Share your favorite ingredients and examples of how they can be applied to the apps, games, toys and sites that you use or design.
This shared buffet of magic is for all to enjoy. Bon appétit!
