This project and publication has been focused on three Toronto neighborhoods undergoing massive upheaval. Two of which are facing rapid transformation and gentrification. With this sudden influx of higher incomes comes wholesale loss and exclusion. Just about every artist I met with was under serious pressure to find new lodging. But I kept hearing about a notable exception.

A whispered name. An organization that was creating long-term and insanely affordable studio spaces for artists – the Akin Collective. I just had to know more.

Oliver Pauk and Michael Vickers are the brain trust behind this artist collective and growing community of creators, gallery hoppers and delightful misfits.

What started as a side burner project in 2008 suddenly became a needed and sustainable venture over the past few years. In a market where individual artists face pressure to just sign month-to-month leases, Akin has been able to forge relationships with building owners and secure long-term leases with max rent increases in writing. The result is studio space that artists can afford and not worry about being ousted by the next coffee shop or greedy developer.

The Akin Collective is an inspiring place to tour. Artists and their work burst out of every nook and cranny. Paints are laid out. Sculptures stand half finished. Someone works on a large mural taped to a shared wall while another bends over a hissing torch.

With shared space memberships starting at $60/month (taxes and wifi included!) and permanent spaces starting at $100/month, Akin has a place for just about every artist. And they are continuing to expand with new buildings and spaces that aim to keep the artists in the very neighbourhoods they have enriched.

P.S. I’m super excited to announce the Akin Collective is coming to the East End of Toronto!
