“In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary” — Aaron Rose. Lighting designs and innovations have only been progressing for a while now. The intriguing part of this progression is the development of contradictory vintage and contemporary styles. We’ve been witnessing spaces with simple familiar lights for a friendly environment, and expos of tech innovations to help visualize the future. We’ve narrowed down the three most popular outdoor lighting styles of for this year.

String Lights

String lights used to be the festive atmosphere we would see on the streets or an outdoor party setup. Now, these fixtures no longer are the temporary layout. With the improvements in light bulbs and wires quality and the control of light brightness, these lights may now be installed all year long in your garden. String lights have been trending and becoming consistently popular and it seems they’re here to stay. The styles of these lights will vary depending on the size and style of the bulb and with it the wires.

For vintage enthusiasts, the Ambience Pro Edison Hanging lights are a sustainable and well-protected string light that uses Edison Bulbs. If you prefer a more traditional round model with a cheaper price, the Ambience Globe G40 can also maintain itself throughout all seasons of the year. These fixtures now switched functions from a festive atmosphere to a cozy and friendly environment. We experience it the most in places with an outdoor terrace or garden seating. And they never fail to impress.

Down Lights

Regardless if you want to light your walkway or garden, direct downlights can make a huge difference in your outdoor environment. Styles within this type mostly vary between industrial contemporary looks or organic models. Both have the possibility of creative implementations depending on what is it in your garden you want to emphasize. Depending on the context, you can either distribute progressively to cover a path or surround a certain zone. If you got your garden well planned, you can use these fixtures to highlight certain elements and features of your garden.

One of the trends that have been emerging for the past two years is the in/out floor lamps. Innovations in these designs have been exceeding expectations. Products like Delta’s Butler, Leucos’ JJ, or Metalarte’s InOut are bringing the indoor living room feel to the exterior spaces. This idea is being tested constantly in different exterior contexts. It’s a creative twist in design that might become a standard for outdoor spaces in the future.

Nature-Inspired Lights

Nature-inspired lights are designs that are either imitating or complimenting its surrounding nature. To compliment nature, a light fixture needs to sustain its energy consumption. The way to achieve sustainability would be by using solar-powered lamps. However, for a while now these types of lamps have been more function oriented with a basic commercial design. One of the indicators that design now cares about sustainable lighting products would be examples like Maiori’s La Lampe Parabole. Now with the development of solar technology and its affordable price, we will be seeing more and more sustainable and creative products like this one.

The other category of this lighting type would be fixtures with natural organic designs. What’s a better way to compliment your plants’ layout than with another natural component? These organic designs vary from mushrooms to bushes to fluid reflections. One distinct design with a unique inspiration would be Jean-Phillip Weimer’s Phili. The design of the fixture was inspired by fireflies and they are best installed within a small flower bush. What this installation really achieves is that not only it brings back the pieces you most enjoy from your garden, but it also changes the whole experience.

Designing the layout and placing the elements of your garden is what makes space the experience you need it to be throughout the day. Without having a well-designed outdoor lighting layout, it won’t be possible to mirror that feeling into the night. The way you place your lighting fixtures, regardless if it’s DIY or expensive designer product, you can make every statement you need. Outdoor lighting should set the mood that you desire around every space you are going to use or even just path through. Don’t hesitate to reach out for professional advice if you are planning to do some changes to your garden.
