Three affordable (under $20) Workspace Upgrades for Remote Interns

This goes out to my fellow remote interns who are struggling to remain productive while balancing class, schoolwork, and intern assignments. Do not despair, for there is hope to remain afloat this semester and not drown in the depths of our to-do lists.

After working (or interning) from home for the past few months for two different Congressional offices, I’ve come across some methods and products that are total game-changers.

This week, I’m focusing on three products to help improve the transition from in-person work to life behind a computer screen. Don’t worry, I too am a student on a budget, so each product featured is under $20.

1. Laptop Stand

Have you ever felt back or neck pain from being hunched over your desk working on your computer? Do you struggle with getting the right screen angle or height on video calls? Then do I have a solution for you!

Laptop stands can position your laptop at different angles and heights, but they can also be used for tablets and even as bookstands. You won’t have to be hunched over your laptop, instead, you’ll be able to adjust your screen to eye level and comfortably get to work.

I’m currently using this adjustable laptop stand from Amazon.

This laptop stand can be folded and placed into your bag in case you want to use it on the go and has rubber pads to prevent slipping and scratches. It’s sturdy and doesn’t shake at all while I type.

I love using this set up to take notes on my laptop from a document or textbook on my iPad.

I’ve taken advantage of the adjustable width of the stand so that I can view my iPad screen beside my laptop at eye level. I’ve discovered it’s one of those products you didn’t know you needed until you have it.

*Hack: Instead of buying a computer stand, stack up some books to raise your screen towards your desired height.

2. Blue Light Filtering Glasses

When your eyes burn after a long day staring at your screen all day, it’s not just because you’re tired. Blue light from computer screens and phone screens strain your eyes which is what causes your eyes to feel dry.

Blue light filtering glasses can ease the strain on your eyes from staring on a screen all day. These glasses from Amazon are pretty cheap and are available in different colors.

As a glasses wearer myself, I prefer a screen protector, but if you wanna look sharp whilst easing the strain on your eyes then these are a great fit.

*Side note: You could also use these products for scrolling on your phone through the late hours of the night, or….for gaming. Just something to think about.

3. Bed Tray aka Laptop Bed Desk

Let’s be honest. Sometimes we don’t want to get out of bed but we still have to be productive. So if you don’t have a Zoom call scheduled, or can get away with having video off during calls on those not-so-lazy days, I recommend a bed tray. Yes, the ones for eating in bed. Instead of using it as an in-bed food tray, use it as a laptop desk.

This bed tray from Ikea has enough room for your laptop and even has a groove for you to place your phone, tablet, or notebook in. It’s also perfect for getting some work done from the comfort of your couch.

  • Side note: this is a great option for attending 8 am classes on Zoom without having to actually get up from your bed.
