#Snapshots August
Some of what we saw in our programs around the world in August
Helping MILLIONS starts with training ONE. International Medical Corps stays long after the news headlines fade — to help communities recover and rebuild by strengthening the capacity of local healthcare workers to serve their own people. In August, we honored brave and resilient local heroes for the work they do on the front lines of conflict, disaster and disease every day.

On August 19th we celebrated World Humanitarian Day to honor the ordinary people taking extraordinary actions to support their communities in times of need, often in difficult or dangerous conditions.

As the situation in Yemen grows increasingly dire, we’re working hard to provide healthcare, food, WASH services and much more to millions forced to leave their homes.

As Ebola case numbers increase in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, we continue to build and manage screening and referral units. We have also delivered infection prevention and control (IPC) supplies and have begun Ebola IPC training for nurses, doctors and hygienists across 14 health centers in Beni and Mangina in the DRC.

We provided cholera awareness and prevention training sessions to women at Kindia Health Center in Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. On August 6, 2018, approximately 145 women in Kindia attended the sessions.

During our week-long campaign from August 6–10, 2018, we worked to provide cholera awareness and prevention training for nearly 15,000 people.

Employees from Pfizer and JP Morgan Chase assembled hygiene kits that will be standing by for our next disaster response.

We worked with the Government of Japan to provide relief to those staying in evacuation centers following the devastating floods. In Uwajima, one of the hardest hit areas by the floods, our team delivered mattresses & basic supplies for those stranded in evacuation centers.

With hundreds of children displaced following the floods in Japan, we also provided support to create safe and friendly spaces for girls and boys, including activities such as storytelling and games, helping children recover.

During World Breastfeeding Week, our team in Somalia, a country with very low breastfeeding rates, held an event to educate and inform over 200 women and men of the long-term benefits of exclusive breastfeeding.

We observed World Water Week from August 26 to 31. Access to safe water, improved sanitation as well as maintaining good hygiene is crucial to human health, well-being, dignity and development. We work to provide these most basic human needs no matter how challenging the conditions.

We participated in the Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Relief (HADR) Village in Downtown Los Angeles. The HADR Village provided Angelenos with a firsthand opportunity to see military and local first responder resources and capabilities that would be activated in the event of a Defense Support of Civil Authorities-level disaster, such as a major earthquake.
