The Late Late Show Web Flop
or when you mention your website on TV this happens
Note: Since I posted this the Late Late Show Team haven’t been in contact and I didn’t get on the Tubridy show. A huge success.
The Late Late Show is an Irish TV show (RTE) show that is watched by hundreds of thousands of people every Friday night for the past million years (approximately).
When businesses appear on it they nearly always make the same mistakes. They mention their web address. The following chaos ensues.
- Interested people all over the country who have laptops, tablets and smartphones go and try and access their website.
- They can’t view it as there is everyone else is trying to see it as well and the person never told their website provider.
- The website crashes badly.
- They reload, refresh (if they can be bothered)
- Something else comes on the show (usually Robbie Keane’s wife)
- Nobody goes back as they are tweeting snide remarks about Robbie Keane’s wife.
- The business who mentions the website sits smugly in their chair thinking of how they got their brand mentioned.
The show goes out at 9pm on a Friday night and once you mention your website you are practically certain to get thousands of interested hits. For some businesses this may be the biggest traffic hit they ever get and sadly they lose a massive experience.
What Should I Do Oh Wise One
- First tell your hosting provider that you are going to get these hits and they will be prepared. And don’t ring them that day, give them some notice.
- Think of all these people and have a mobile ready page for them as many of them will be on smart phones. Make it load fast and be interesting, relevant and pertinent to what you spoke about on the show.
- Capture their email addresses by having a landing page that captures their attention, gives away something free, an ebook, or some sort of great sign up offer.
- Direct them to an informative page that will engage them, don’t forget they are watching TV and you need to keep their eyes. Perhaps a short personal video that might expand on what your are going to speak about or already have spoken about on the TV (Power Tip — mention this item on TV) to encourage even more to visit
- Once they sign up — immediately get back to them with some offer (free if possible) and or direct them to an interesting insight. Most email sign up programs allow this to happen.
It is critical that what you direct them to is simple and straightforward and they can act on it while also perhaps watching TV, peering at Twitter and chatting with their family.
If you don’t do at least some of the above you will probably lose one of he biggest marketing opportunities that you ever have.
