An Open Source Ecology of Energy.
The Early Vision of IOEN (2019) + Video
Global climate change has already had observable effects on the environment. The loss of sea ice, extreme weather events and intense heat waves. Many countries in the world are dealing with massive forest fires and if we don’t take steps now, the challenges will only worsen. We are in a climate emergency, and we need to accelerate the transition to clean energy resources.
In 2019, RedGrid CEO, Dr. Adam Bumpus, presented the idea of an open-source ecology of energy; a system that is open for clean energy communities, entrepreneurs and catalysts to participate in and build new capabilities. A vision for an energy ecosystem inspired by mutual altruism.
Mutual altruism is a mindset shift compared to what we are traditionally used to. It is the idea that a greater total benefit is created by the community volunteering to help one another, with the understanding that when an individual is in need at a later time, they will be taken care of.
These early concepts outlined by RedGrid in 2019 laid the foundation for what is now the Internet of Energy Network (IOEN), where mutualism is achieved between devices that are playing their part to balance the grid.
In a future article, we will dive deeper into how IOEN takes advantage of mutual credit currency architectures to unlock this within energy ecosystems.
