Portland’s Thriving Community Radio

XRAY.fm and Radionomy Empower City’s Indie Vibe

This is the story of a Portland Oregon radio station that is adding diversity to the radio landscape and using the Internet to offer listeners a unique and amazing new radio station. XRAY.fm is using Radionomy to broadcast their station to their hometown of Portland OR, as well as around the world from their website XRAY.fm. Portland is known for its eclectic music scene, but their radio stations weren’t representing it. To fill the gap, XRAY.fm took to Kickstarter.com to raise funds and create a new station. They were exponentially successful as they asked for $40,000 but ended up receiving more than $100,000 in support.

XRAY.fm recently was awarded an FM signal at 91.1FM (KXRY) to bring the sound home while continuing to grow their online popularity.

Radionomy has given us all the tools we need to get our broadcast out to the world via the Internet. We love the fact that there are no caps on the bandwidth and amount of listeners who can access our stream. Additionally, they have a suite of analytics based reporting tools that give us a lot of insight as to where our listeners are tuning in. We have nothing but good things to say about Radionomy and their service.” — Matt Blanks | Web & Design Manager | KXRY.

Radionomy also added them to their mobile app and made the stream available in TuneIn and iTunes to support distribution. Radionomy offers a no-cost streaming and distribution to both traditional and online broadcasters with its easy-to-use programming platform at radionomy.com/create

The radio station’s website lists local events, people profiles, and opportunities to contribute and get involved with the station. There are even a few block parties scheduled to celebrate this new community gem. The best radio is local radio where technology can serve to help build upon the unique voice of a community. Portland is the perfect place to galvanize great content, showing off the fact that there is no other place quite like Portland! We hope more and more communities will follow in these funky footsteps and create a local radio renaissance.
