INTERPRIDE STATEMENT ON THE RECENT SHOOTING AT AN LGBTQIA+ NIGHTCLUB IN COLORADO SPRINGS
We cannot allow hate to prevail against our #ChosenFamily.
An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.
Today, there was another terrible shooting involving our fellow Pride family members. In the mass shooting, loved ones, partners, and friends were killed, and many others were hurt. This tragedy is being seen all over the world. Unfortunately, it's not the first time in recent history that someone has done something so horrible and violent to hurt a whole community out of hatred.
Our 2SLGBTQIA+ spaces serve as places where people find belonging, community, connection, and their chosen family. We are mortified and hurt by another blatant attack on ClubQ in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA, similar to other 2SLGBTQIA+ targeted mass shootings in Roanoke, Virginia, USA (Backstreet Cafe, 2000), Orlando, Florida, USA (Pulse Nightclub, 2016), Xalpa, Veracruz, Mexico (La Madame, 2016), and Oslo, Norway (London Pub, 2022).
Hate crimes kill a disproportionate number of two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer and questioning people, particularly gay and trans people of color in our community.
The recent shooting happened on the same day as International Trans Day of Remembrance, when we remember trans people who were killed similarly.
InterPride stands in solidarity with our fellow community members during this troubling time. We must continue fighting against hate, discrimination, and the evil that pervades our society. None of us are free until all of us are free to be our authentic selves.
