A Note on America’s Rice Trade & The Blacks Who Built It
If you ever wondered why we need a Black History Month, I have the answer for you. To be honest, I don't know if I should be writing this now because I am livid!
But, write, I shall. Perhaps later I’ll assess. Or maybe my rage should be put on full display.
I’m a firm believer in freedom of speech. I’m also a firm believer in listening to and hearing out those who hold opposing views. I seek them out.
Why? Why would I willingly subject myself to hateful rhetoric or bigoted talking points? For two reasons.
One, there’s a possibility I could be wrong about some things. I’m not arrogant enough to think I’ve cornered the market on all things right and true. I, like the rest of us, have a lot to learn. When I’m wrong, I’m okay admitting it.
Two, the lawyer in me knows the golden rule of battle, know your enemy’s argument as well, if not better than you know your own. To debate and defeat, one must know the arguments of the other side.
But today, I heard something that made me so angry, I almost lost my head.
