South Los Angeles intersection to be renamed in honor of Nipsey Hussle
The legacy of Grammy-nominated South Los Angeles rapper and entrepreneur Nipsey Hussle lives on, as the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and West Slauson Avenue will be renamed in his honor, Los Angeles City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson announced Tuesday.
The intersection, to be called Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom Square, is home to Hussle’s Marathon Clothing Store, where Hussle was shot and killed last week.
“Nipsey Hussle was an icon and West Coast hero,” Councilman Harris-Dawson said in a press release. “Nipsey will always be remembered for delivering a pure, authentic Los Angeles sound, his numerous philanthropic efforts, his innovative, community-focused business mindset, and his humble heart.”
The councilman’s decision comes after an online petition, that called for the intersection to be named in Hussle’s honor, gathered nearly 500,000 signatures. The petition reads, “[Hussle] wasn’t just a rapper. He was a community icon.” Hussle was idolized throughout the South L.A. community.
A memorial for Hussle will be held on Thursday at the Staples Center, the rapper’s family announced on Instagram. The service, which was sold out in minutes, will last two hours and conclude with a 25-mile funeral procession, according to the Staples Center website.
More information on the procession, which is expected to pass Hussle’s clothing store as well as the newly named intersection, is yet to be announced.
