Those who’ve walked the Moonlit Path
Day Twenty | Waiting Still

It’s the beneficiaries
of the current system
that robs in broad daylight
who teach fear
of the dark
And this teaching is effective

So effective we’re afraid of our own
shadow

We must become students
of another teacher
Those who’ve known desperation
They know the beauty and provision
of the Moonlit Path

Mary
just barely a woman
carrying the Universe
at her breast
Joseph
disgraced by day
Loving protector and
nurturing husband by night

Shepherds and Magi, too
Keeping flocks and reading
the planets in the moonlight

The moon walkers are all around us
Maybe you, too, have been blessed
to come close enough to One
to see the Moon in their eyes

Mary and Joseph are Bhutanese
refugees in St. Paul
One week under a new roof
after seventeen years of the camp’s
blue plastic tarp
They invited me in and fed me dinner

There are shepherds
in Stillwater Prison
Dressed in denim and sweats
who tend flocks with such compassion
Shepherds who’ve come to know
No longer fear their shadow

And the Magi
Anishinaabe Grandmothers
who follow the Prophecies
and care for the Water
Even with all the corporate Herods
and their client kings
executing violence
and threatening our future
The Grandmothers are still here
Praying at the River

You will know when you’ve
encountered One
who walks the Moonlit Path
You’ll know it in the Healing
Returning Home
one step closer to Whole

Oh Moon,
Thank You
for Your soft light
For Your instruction
Embracing shadow
For the magnetic pull
of Your love on our hearts

Stir up the Water in us
Guide us along Your path
Teach us, again, how to glow
