If you follow this goal, you might as well look at the highest position on the ladder and hope you will get there in the shortest amount of time. For instance: if you’re an engineer, let’s say CTO – ok probably more Tech Lead.

But if you want to answer this question more accurately, you may want to first take a deep breath and look first at what you’ve accomplished over the past 5 years to first understand your personal growth and then your possibilities. Your answer won’t be random: it will show that you may want to be more involved in a specific technology or learn new skills.

Personally, and even if you can figure out the perfect answer for this question, my answer has always been: I don’t know.

It’s actually impossible to see a specific role I could be doing in the next 5 years from now because in the past 5 years I’ve had a lot of different roles and great challenges. I’ve also lived in 3 different continents (North America, South America, Europe), traveled in more than 20 countries, and meet hundreds of people along the way. What if it just has to be fun and inspiring?

So before asking this question to someone you’ve just met, ask yourself: what have you done in the last 5 years you can be proud of?

One good thing to always remember:

You can die tomorrow, so make today meaningful.
