Process Mining II: What is behind it?

In last week’s blog post I have shown why process mining is so important for corporates. In this week’s blog I want to shed light on what process mining actually is.
Process mining explained
To put it simply: Process mining is, in the first step, using a specific software, for instance, to look at what the people in your company do with their time. And in a second step, having the same software describe your employee’s actions to you in the form of processes.
Slightly more technical: Process mining is a family of approaches which look at data from event logs to see what people are doing. From looking at the actions of someone completing a task, a process can be automatically constructed. By continuing to gather this data over time you can start to see where bottlenecks occur or where inefficiencies lie within the process.
Why use process mining?
The use of process mining offers various benefits. Process mining techniques are often used when it is not possible to obtain descriptions of the process by other approaches, or when the quality of existing documentation is questionable.
Process mining is a highly valuable solution for insights generation and provides several benefits for buiness owners and organizations: for instance
- Understanding how a process is actually performed
- Improving the process flow by knowing the actual flows, frequencies, and delays in the process
- Cost savings by improving the productivity of employees
- Harmonizing processes in different regions by understanding how people work in different ways to see what the best practices are and to align processes.
- Improving the quality and increasing the efficiency of auditing
After having explained what process mining is and what benefits it offers, I believe it becomes clear how important this tool is for every business in order to stay productive.
