United States. The Caprolactam price in United States decreased during Q4 2022 to 2,640 USD per metric ton, which represents a considerable decline of 10% compared to the previous quarter’s value. On a year-over-year basis, Caprolactam prices in United States increased by 13%.
Japan. In Q4 2022, the Caprolactam price in Japan witnessed a decline of 207 USD per metric ton when compared against the previous quarter’s price, to 1,583 USD per metric ton. The Q4 2022 price is 19% lower than the price one year before.
Belgium. Caprolactam prices in Belgium rose considerably throughout Q4 2022, reaching 2,603 USD per metric ton. The current price is 9% higher than the average price in the last quarter and 30% higher than the average price one year ago.
Turkey. Caprolactam prices in Turkey increased significantly during Q4 2022, reaching 2,393 USD per metric ton, which means a rise of 11% from the previous quarter’s price and a rise of 4% from the previous year’s price.
India. In the quarter examined, the Caprolactam prices in India experienced a significant decline of 483 USD per metric ton from the previous quarter’s price, to 1,737 USD per metric ton. Such price movement meant a decrease of 22% on a quarterly basis and a decrease of 21% on a yearly basis.

A Little Bit About Caprolactam
Caprolactam (a.k.a. CPL, Azepan-2-one) is a cyclic amide widely used as a chemical intermediate. It is soluble in water, most oxygenated and chlorinated solvents, and some hydrocarbons. This organic compound can be produced on commercial scale from cyclohexanone, cyclohexane, or toluene as starting materials.Caprolactam solution is clear to milky white-colored liquid and has a mild, unpleasant smell. Most of Caprolactam production is based on the cyclohexanone process, which involves the conversion of cyclohexanone to cyclohexanone oxime followed by a Beckmann rearrangement step. To a lesser extent, Caprolactam is produced commercially by the photonitrosation of cyclohexane or by nitrosation of cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (derived from toluene) in the presence of sulfuric acid.It is worth noting that, ultimately, the main commercial processes employed for Caprolactam production are based on benzene or toluene from BTX, and generate ammonium sulfate as byproduct.
Flaked caprolactam must be preferably exposed to temperature below 45 °C with less than 65% of relative humidity. Storage is made in polyethylene or aluminum coated paper bags and protected from direct sunlight. Tank trailers or railroad cars are recommended for transport. Molten caprolactam should be stored and transported under a nitrogen atmosphere with less than 10 ppm of oxygen, using stainless steel or aluminum containers at about 80 °C.
Almost all Caprolactam produced is consumed as monomer in the production of polycaprolactam, also known as nylon 6. Fibers, sheets, filaments and bristles made from nylon 6 can be used, in turn, in a broad range of products, including apparel and home furnishings; carpets; and industrial uses (tires, reinforced rubber products). This commodity can be used in the manufacture of derivatives, such as: 6-aminocaproic acid; caprolactam disulfide; hexamethyleneimine; nylon 6; poly(ether-amide) elastomers; n-vinylcaprolactam; lysine.
