A Little Bit About Carbon Black

Carbon Black is a generic term for a family of highly dispersed elemental carbon, with nano sized particles. Carbon black is a black powder, of extremely fine particles, insoluble in water. It differs from other bulk carbon forms (such as diamond, graphite, coke, etc.) since it is composed of complex configurations aggregates, with nano material like properties. Carbon black is considered one of the most stable chemical products in existence. The powder has been used as a pigment since Paleolithic times, being produced by burning vegetable oils. After the discovery of the benefits of carbon black as a reinforcing agent for rubber in 1904, its production rapidly grew. Currently, it is the most widely used nano-material worldwide, although substitution by silica may affect the market.

Great majority of carbon black is transported as a bulk material, while the rest is handled in bags. The material is shipped by rail or in bulk trucks. It is transported in silo trucks or in containers, with a capacity up to 20 t, or in big bags and steel bins with a capacity of about 1 t. Usually, coated steel storage tanks, with a capacity of 100–1000 t are used for storage. Some special purpose blacks are shipped and stored in plastic or paper bags, stacked on palettes.

Carbon black is mainly employed in rubber reinforcement; carbon paper; tire/belt production; battery electrodes; and antioxidant. It is also used as black pigment; electrical conductor; UV-light absorber; colorant; opacifier; and antioxidant. This commodity can be used in the manufacture of derivatives, such as: molded carbon; titanium carbide; tungsten carbide.
