A Little Bit About Phenol-Formaldehyde Resins
Phenol-Formaldehyde Resins (a.k.a. PF, Phenolic resins) are synthetic polymers of phenol and formaldehyde. They were the first commercialized synthetic plastics and are still very important industrial polymers. The most common application of Phenol-Formaldehyde Resins is in adhesives for bonding wood products, especially those desired for exterior plywood. It has great moisture resistance, low cost and good thermal and flame resistance.
Phenol-Formaldehyde should be stored in cool places, away from direct sunlight. It can be stored for 1 week at temperatures around 25°C. At larger temperatures, viscosity will increase in rates that significantly reduce the resins storage time. Solid Resins which are sold in broken pieces, flakes, pastilles, or granules, can be packed in sacks, drums, or large containers. Phenolic resin solutions are not corrosive and can therefore be stored in iron containers, if a possible coloration of the resin is acceptable. Otherwise the containers must be coated on the inside. Liquid phenolic resins are transported in tank cars, containers, or tank pallets.
Phenolic resins are mainly employed in adhesives for wood products; laminates; as phenolic resin foam; crosslinking agents; binders; molding compounds; rubber hardness; strength additive; and fibre. This commodity can be used in the manufacture of derivatives, such as: phenolic-epoxy resins; amino-substituted phenolic resins; benzoxazine resin; epoxy-novolac resins; sulfonated furan/phenol-formaldehyde resins.
