Wherefore Meribah

Every year the rabbi’s prayers get a little longer
But the people still complain
And find new ways to torment themselves

So in the wilderness of Sinai
Moses struck the rock
And let the people be drunken on the holy waters

And if I thought
It would do any good
I’d stand on that rock where Moses stood

But God killed Moses
For his terrible great sin
And the people never sobered

So every year
Here in the wilderness of Sinai
