My research topic involves both the Reconquest of New Mexico after 1690 and the unique amalgamation of Christianity and traditional Pueblo beliefs that continues to this day. I’ve long been interested in syncretism because of its philosophical implications: a subversive way for the colonized to continue traditional customs, as a means of survival. However, I’ve come to learn more through cursory readings of articles in this class of syncretism being encouraged by the Church to abet colonization efforts. I am therefore interested in exploring the Church’s stance on syncretism generally and how Pueblo syncretism specifically may or may not have affected the Spanish strategy of Reconquest. I am also interested in learning more about how and why Pueblo people have incorporated Christian customs into their own, which I hope happens organically as I research the colonizer perspective (this being my first application of the skills gained in this class, I also anticipate there being more literature and documentation from this perspective).

My research question is: What was the Catholic Church’s stance on syncretic practice of Christianity by the Pueblo people after the Revolt and how did this affect the Reconquest efforts of New Mexico after 1690?

I posted late to Twitter, so I’m open to feedback on my question. I’m sure it will evolve as I delve into the topic.
