An intrusion detection system is what is sounds like. It is a system that detects attempts at intrusions, mostly into a network. They are easy to explain as a concept, but are advanced applications. There are countless techniques in how to filter and inspect the information the IDS’ pick up.

So and IDS will tell you that you’ve been hacked. That’s not really too helpful, other than seeing what has happened. What a lot of smart people have realized, is that this system should prevent the things it detects. This is called an Intrusion Prevention System. It is exactly what it sounds like. It is a system that, instead of just detecting intrusions, it will also prevent it.

These systems, can often, be easily applied in company or consumer networks. Systems like Snort have a lot of guides online on how to install and how to use them. They have rulesets that are already created for you.

Intrusion detection systems are getting more relevant. There are more and more malware out in the wild now and these systems will help both consumers and companies in staying safe and online.
