“Average Joe Ingles” becoming a force for the Utah Jazz
By Janey Murray
At the beginning of March, ESPN NBA reporter Tim MacMahon wrote a feature story on Joe Ingles, a small forward for the Utah Jazz.
Ingles has become a key part of Utah’s playoff push. The Australia native is currently second on the team in 3-pointers made and is the only player on the team who has played in all 71 games so far this season. He is also second overall in the NBA in 3-point percentage for the season at 44.3 percent.
The story is very timely, since Ingles has become a key player for the Jazz as they have recently started to make a playoff push and become one of the hottest teams in the NBA. MacMahon specifically talked about how Ingles went on a hot streak during Utah’s recent 11-game winning streak.
MacMahon gave an interesting backstory on Ingles in the story. He opened by talking about fans and teammates alike make fun of Ingles, saying he looks like an accountant or a math teacher. He then went on to talk about Ingles’s past, and how he nearly gave up on the NBA after he was cut by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014. Instead, Utah gave him a chance, and now he has developed into a key player for the team. MacMahon also talked about how Ingles and Gordon Heyward developed a friendship while they both played for the Jazz.
I really liked this story overall. I thought it was really well-reported. MacMahon talked to Ingles, his teammates, Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey, Ingles’s wife, Renae, and Jazz coach Quin Snyder. I do not have many suggestions, as the story is very well written and presented. One suggestion I might give is that MacMahon referenced several social media posts from Ingles’s teammates. It might be a nice element to include links to those posts for readers to find them more easily.
