This feature story written by Corrie Hemry for NBA.com is about Corey Brewer who is the oldest person on the Lakers’ roster and the second oldest player in the NBA. The article starts off with Brewer’s journey to the NBA starting with his small town roots where he learned a strong work ethic from helping his father on their family farm. He advanced his education by attending University of Florida and playing on the Gators’ basketball team, leading them to win back-to-back NCAA championships in 2006 and 2007. He entered the draft where he was picked seventh overall by the Timberwolves and was traded four years later to the Mavericks. They won the 2011 NBA Finals making Brewer one of just 40 people to win championships at both the collegiate and professional level.

Learning his background was very interesting but learning about his personal life made Brewer stand out even more. Brewer is very active in the diabetes community because of the personal impact the disease has had on him. His father passed away from diabetes, and most of his family including his mother either have Type I or Type II diabetes. He created the Corey Brewer Foundation and puts on a camp each year in Florida to provide awareness and education to children living with this disease.

Although the article did provide a lot of information about his personal life and his family, I wish they had included more quotes from Brewer about his involvement in diabetes. The quotes that they did include did not provide much extra information and I think hearing about his involvement from his words would have made the story more personal.

I really enjoyed this feature and learning about the silly and fun-loving personality that Brewer has. I liked learning about the impact that he has had on his team and the lessons that he has taught. Even though he may not be the star player or veteran that everyone looks up to on the court, he certainly has left an impact on his team and community.
