Dallas Mavericks? You mean Dennis Smith Jr.?
By Caroline McLeod
It’s no question the Dallas Mavericks’ current season status remains a rocky one. The Mavericks currently sit at a losing record of 18–40. With unexplainable losses and surprising wins, some say it’s a “rebuilding” season.
Other people argue otherwise since Dallas is not a “young” team. Instead, the Mavericks put pressure on three players to carry the weight of the team. Dennis Smith Jr. pulls a good amount of the weight as a rookie averaging 15.5 points per game. The point guard consistently shows his physicality and potential throughout games with his aggressive drives to the basket.
Smith isn’t the only player taking on the work load. In the Maverick’s last home game against the Sacramento Kings, J.J. Barea scored a total of 19 points. Harrison Barnes scored 18 points as well as Dwight Powell. Dallas lost 114–109 at home yet again.
The Mavericks have marginal losses showing their potential to improve. But the team cannot simply rely on a few offensive players to bring home the wins.
With 24 games left to play in the season, there is much at stake for the Mavericks. Dallas can get back its former glory, but the team must start playing as a single unit rather than relying on a single player.
