On the Rebound

The Phoenix Suns have had an abysmal season this year. This is no secret and my colleagues and I have not been shy about pointing it out. When a team is performing as poorly as the Suns have been it would be reasonable to expect their stats to be equally as terrible. While that is mostly true, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Suns are actually really good at rebounding.

While this stat doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things it is definitely interesting that a terrible team would be close to the top in any statistical category. They rank seventh in offensive rebounds per game as well as thirteenth in overall rebounds. Their defensive rebounds are not much to brag about as they are only seventeenth in that category.

So what does this mean going forward? Well not a whole lot. Their high offensive rebound percentage strongly correlates with their poor shooting, and low number of points scored. More missed shots equal more chances to get the rebound. It’s not all bad though, a high number of rebounds can also mean they are playing very physical. Either way, this season will be a forgettable one for the Suns, but alt least they can say they excelled at something.
