Why the Rockets should rethink the field goal
By Anna Catherine Alderman
The Houston Rockets are known for their high scoring games. They are currently tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for most points per game with 148 in their win over the Lakers on December 31, 2017. When discussing the Rockets, most people automatically think of James Harden and his high 3-point percentage. However, Clint Capela’s field goal shooting is quietly making a big difference.
Capela is not known for shooting 3-pointers unlike the rest of his team. His 3-point percentage is at zero because of the lack of 3-point shots he takes. No one is denying Harden’s contributions to the team, but Capela’s presence on the court changes the way the Rockets play. Whether shooting in the paint, rebounding, or blocking shots, Capela is an impactful player. He currently leads the team in rebounds with an average of 11.1. He also averages 1.8 blocks per game, which ranks him fifth in the league.
Capela scored 23 points in the Rockets 130–104 win over the Denver Nuggets on February 9, 2018. As seen in the clip above, Capela did not shoot a 3-pointer during the 29 minutes he played. In addition to his 23 points, he also had 25 rebounds and two blocks. The might not be record-breaking numbers, but he did help put the Rockets on top.
Capela leads the NBA in field goal percentage with 65.4 percent. He is also fifth in the league in points in the paint per game. Surprisingly, the Rockets are ranked №12 in field goal percentage. It is obvious that the Rockets favor the 3-point shot due to their high scoring games, but Capela could change the dynamic and playing style with his high field goal percentage. Maybe the Rockets should rethink the importance of the field goal.
