An Exceptional Number divisible by each number from 1 to 10 — A Ramanujan’s Discovery
An equation means nothing to me unless it expresses a thought of God.
~ Srinivasa Ramanujan
We all might know Ramanujan and his great mathematical instincts. He called his mathematical ability as a gift from god. He could find mathematics and important patterns in day to day life. In one of my previous articles, The story behind Hardy-Ramanujan Number, I wrote about an instance of discovery of Ramanujan-Hardy number, showcasing his strong mathematical instinct and understanding. In this article, we will get to know about another cool number discovered by Ramanujan.
Do you know that there is a number that is divisible by each number from 1 to 10? If not, yes, there is such number. The number is 2520.
But what’s so unique about this? Anyone with basic mathematical knowledge would have been able to find this. But wait! Ramanujan didn’t check this obvious property in a very obvious way. Rather he found out this in this in the most unique way like the Hardy-Ramanujan number.
Considering there are 7 days in a whole week, 30 days in a month, and a total of 12 months in a year. So, if we multiply all these three numbers i.e. 7 × 30 × 12 = 2520. Here, the factors consists of every number from 1 to 10. Surprised, right? That’s the sharpness of Srinivasa Ramanujan!
In the end, whether this discovery of 2520 helped the mathematical world in any way or not can’t be said but this unique discovery of Ramanujan’s made an impact and no one could have been able to explain it.
Hope, you enjoyed my short, fun article. I hope to continue writing in the future, too. If you have any suggestions about anything on my writings, they are highly appreciated.
