Google vs. Facebook — Who Won the Battle of 2016?

2016 is wrapping up! Just few hours to go for 2017. It’s the time to analyze success and failures occurred during the year. Here we have tried to analyze the popularity of various apps in 2016 using the survey of a leading market research company named Nielsen. They have recently released a report that admits Facebook and Google apps were top on the list that users love to use.

Facebook

Well, both the tech giants had a neck-to-neck competition to be the top choice for user’s. Once again, Facebook reaped the first position in the list of “Top Smartphone Apps in 2016” by reaching out more than 146 million average users per month with 14% growth over the year.

Apart from Facebook, Messenger and Instagram also spotted on the rank 2 and 8 respectively. These are few of the apps that are gaining more growth year over year. By earning second place on the list, messenger gave a surprise to everyone. The app was used by over 129 million average unique monthly users in 2016.

Google

When Facebook attained the top spot, Google grabbed the most spots on the chart. As per the research of Nielsen, various Google apps placed on the list of “Top Smartphone Apps in 2016”. They are YouTube (#3), Google Maps (#4), Google Search (#5), Google Play (#6), and Gmail (#7). These apps are most useful apps to the users that they use frequently, on everyday basis. All these apps facilitate users with necessary utilities such as search, email, maps, etc. So, it is very obvious to have these apps on top of the chart.

Amazon

Nielsen also unveiled that Amazon, one of the best online shopping sites, broke the records during these holiday season. It achieved number one position in the category of e-commerce sites and #10 on the chart. According to the market research firm, people preferred mobile app of Amazon for shopping throughout the year, as the app saw 43% increase in terms of monthly average unique.

One another research of Nielsen on “Top U.S. Smartphone Operating Systems by Market Share” revealed that Android is the market leader with 53% of market share. It is followed by iOS (45%), Windows (2%) and Blackberry (1%).
